DrrniNG the past winter session I have enjoyed the privilege of closely watching Professor Lister's practice in the surgical wards of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Having attempted ?with, very imperfect success I am bound to confess?to put in practice Mr. Lister's system of Antiseptic Surgery while officiating as Second Surgeon in the Medical College Hospital, I availed myself, with peculiar interest, of the opportunity of personally watching and studying the matter, with a view to discovering how far my failures were due to the imperfections of the system or of my attempts to practise it, and of convincing myself of the reality or otherwise of the advantages claimed for it. I have,?accordingly, attended Mr. Lister's lectures, and accompanied him in his daily visits assiduously, and after having thus enjoyed ample opportunities of learning his principles, observing his methods and seeing his results, I havo deliberately and unreservedly arrived at the conclusion that my failures in the Medical College were entirely due to want of efficient
